Browser Savepoint

A browser extension that saves and restores encrypted tab sessions, with local backups and optional self-hosted storage.

Browser Savepoint extension showing session unlock and backup actions

About the Project

Browser Savepoint turns a window full of tabs into a password-protected session that can be restored later. The extension supports encrypted local files and optional server-backed backups, with a local fallback when the server is unavailable. Session data is encrypted in the browser using Web Crypto before storage. Import skips duplicate URLs and asks for confirmation before opening large sessions. Built as a personal tool and used within my circle, it focuses on a practical save-and-restore workflow rather than a browser account or sync service.

Key Features

  • Export and restore encrypted tab-session files
  • Optional self-hosted backup storage and save management
  • Client-side encryption with PBKDF2 and AES-GCM
  • Local backup workflow when the server is unavailable
  • Duplicate URL skipping and confirmation for large imports

Engineering Focus

  • Preserving a useful local workflow alongside optional remote storage
  • Managing password-derived keys without persisting unlocked credentials
  • Handling restricted browser URLs and large session restores

Outcomes & Impact

  • Provides a reusable save-and-restore workflow for personal browsing sessions
  • Keeps encrypted local backups available independently of a server
